Paula Badosa is finally starting to fulfil her potential after a tumultuous career to date.

The 27-year-old battled with serious injuries and contemplated retirement just over a year ago, but has returned to form and booked a spot in the Australian Open semi finals.

Speaking on Wide World of Sports’ The Morning Serve, former player Sam Smith heaped praise on the Spaniard for the way she has bounced back over the past 12 months.

“There’s no doubt about it – she was always destined,” Smith said.

“Ten years ago, she was one of the best juniors in the world and winning junior slams and touted as the next Maria Sharapova. It didn’t quite happen that transition, she got up to No.2 in the world, but I feel she is a better tennis player now.

“She’s more emotionally mature and something certainly happened with the break she had out and I’m really pleased to see it because she is a wonderful player.”

Badosa will take on reigning champion and close friend Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the final tonight.
