The semifinals for the ATP Dallas 500 indoors in Texas are set, with Casper Ruud the #2 seed taking on Spain’s Jaume Munar, while American Tommy Paul faces a resurgent Denis Shapovalov for a spot in the final. Here is your look at both matches.
Ruud leads the h2h 3-1, which isn’t a surprise given their gap in career performance and current ranking. Munar’s hope is that he did easily dispatch Ruud last year in Tokyo on a hard court, and then followed that up with pushing their Australian Open meeting to five sets just weeks ago, which implies that Ruud is not going in for a cakewalk here. Ruud did drop a set against James Duckworth to open the tournament but has been sailing smoothly since then. Ruud’s last final was in Geneva last year, he should reach a final this opportunity. Munar hasn’t had much success outside of the ATP Challenger Tour and needed three sets against Matteo Arnaldi in the previous round. The upset of Ben Shelton in his second match was huge, but I do think he comes up short this time. Ruud in 2
Paul leads the h2h 2-1 but all three meetings went three sets on the ATP Tour, so we should be in for a thrilling clash. Shapovalov needed three sets in his first two matches, including an upset of Taylor Fritz, before racing past Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals, the Canadian just reached the Belgrade final in November and is bidding to do reach another just a few months later. Paul struggled a bit in first two matches before picking up the pace to get past Reilly Opelka in straight sets, he beat three Americans to get here, and gets a Canadian in the semifinals. The Australian Open quarterfinalist was last in an ATP final in October, so these are two in-form competitors, Shapovalov has a lot of upsides favorables to his game, but don’t count out Paul in this one, and it should come down to a deciding set once more.
