The cat (Martha Stewart’s fitness routine) is out of the bag. The lifestyle mogul recently had a chat with Pamela Anderson for Elle and let slip that she does Pilates three mornings a week.
The topic came up when Anderson complimented Stewart’s vitality for her age. “I’m strong and I’m healthy. But I work at it. I take care of myself. And I do have good heredity,” Stewart said. Anderson explained that she doesn’t go to a traditional gym, but likes to stay active by doing functional fitness like gardening and dancing. “Dancing is great exercise. But I’ve always been active, so that’s what keeps me in shape. I don’t go to the gym or anything like that,” she added.
Stewart quipped: “You don’t do Pilates like I do three mornings a week at 6:30 a.m.?”
For someone who is as active and full of life as Stewart, it’s normal to wonder about her fitness routine, which is something she seems to have nailed down since preparing to pose for the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition in 2023.
“I went to Pilates every other day and that was great; I’m still going to Pilates every other day ‘cause it’s so great,” she said at the time on Today. For those unfamiliar, Pilates is a low-impact workout that focuses on strength and flexibility, with moves taking place either on a yoga mat or a reformer machine. As evidenced by one Instagram post from last year, Stewart seemingly prefers the latter.
Before Pilates became a staple for Stewart, she maintained an active lifestyle. Similar to Anderson, she has land to maintain and animals to tend to. “I ride at least once a week, my beautiful Friesian horses. I sort of never sit down. That’s one way I stay active, I don’t sit very much,” she previously told Prevention. “I walk, I hike. I garden. I’m always planting, I’m always weeding, I’m always designing. So I’m outside a lot. I have a lot of animals too that I take care of… it keeps one very, very busy.”
In her chat with Anderson, Stewart also revealed that she’s currently writing an autobiography in which, who knows, she may share even more tidbits of her ever-evolving fitness routine. “I’m not going to let anything not be said. I want to tell it all,” she said. “One of my mottos is, ‘When you’re through changing, you’re through.’ So it’s extremely important for me to keep change happening. The next [magazine] cover will be in a bikini!”
