Aston Villa are closely keeping tabs on the situation of Werder Bremen attacking midfielder Romano Schmid, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Villans have scouted the Austria international this term and have made concrete inquiries for him as they look to bring him to the Midlands when the January transfer window opens.
The Bundesliga club value Schmid at around €10 million as his contract expires in 2026, and Villa could come calling next summer if they are unable to land him in January.
Villa are not the only ones keen on the 24-year-old, with a couple of other clubs also monitoring his situation.
Manager Unai Emery wants to bolster his attacking ranks for the second half of the season after seeing his side go without a win in their last six games across all competitions.
Schmid has a goal and two assists in 13 games this term after ending last season with four goals and seven assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances. His versatility and strengths have appealed to Villa.
The Austrian can play as a right winger, behind the striker and as a central midfielder, and his creativity on the ball and ability to make the right passes are excellent qualities Villa could utilise.
They have slipped down to eighth in the Premier League table after two defeats and two draws in their last four games.
They must strengthen their squad if they want to finish in the top four and win silverware this season.
