PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -The golf season is winding down around the County, but plans for the future growth of the game are ongoing and that was one of the topics of a golf summit in Presque Isle on Wednesday.

”What Maine Golf provides for services. Also hold a round table of what worked well and didn’t work well,” said Brian Bickford.

One of the topics discussed was promoting what the golf courses in the County have to offer.

”Basically their golf diversity is significant. Whether it is 18 hole championship golf, senior golf or as you mentioned nine hole golf courses. It has a lot to offer,” said Bickford.

Golf has been on the rise throughout the State of Maine and this year with nearly perfect conditions for much of the summer the number of rounds played increased, but Bickford said a better indicator for Maine Golf goes back to the skyrocketing interest in golf since the pandemic.

”Statewide data indicates that rounds are up around 12 to 14 percent,” said Bickford, “A lot of that has to do with year to year comparisons. Last year was a rainy season, but if you flatten that out a little bit golf is up significantly particularly since the pandemic. Statewide we are up 80 percent in rounds played since 2020 and that is a year over year increase that is significant and nothing that golf has seen ever in the past.”
