Arlington resident Craig Esherick last month became a Hall of Famer at his high school alma mater, Springbrook High School in Silver Spring.
During an Oct. 19 dinner ceremony at Argyle Country Club, the former Georgetown University head men’s basketball coach (and former player) and longtime local resident was one of nine inductees, selected for his prowess in boys basketball at Springbrook.
He is a 1974 graduate of the high school.
“I feel very lucky to have played for Springbrook and for good coaches along the way,” Esherick told ARLnow. “It was so much fun, with great memories.”
Esherick was a solid outside shooter for Springbrook, where he was chosen all-county and all-state, along with being selected all-Met by The Washington Post and now-defunct Washington Star newspapers.
Averaging 18 points per game his senior season, Esherick scored a career-high 38 points in one game for Springbrook and 26 in his final contest, a semifinal loss in the Maryland state tournament.
Esherick helped the Blue Devils win county championships and reach the state tournament as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Esherick was recruited to play basketball in college at Georgetown. He did so for four seasons, graduating in 1978, later becoming an assistant coach for the Hoyas, and eventually its head coach.
In 2022, Esherick was inducted into the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife, former Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos, have two sons, who each played basketball for Yorktown High School.
