The ASU football vs Oklahoma State game will resume at approximately 5 p.m. MST after a weather delay because of lightning in the area.
It was announced that the players will return to the field at 4:30 p.m. MST for a new round of warm-ups.
The game was moved up from a 4 p.m. MST kickoff to 12:30 p.m. kickoff in an attempt to beat the lightning and thunderstorms, but the game in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was suspended at halftime with ASU in front 21-14.
Boone Pickens Stadium was emptied as a precaution, with the scoreboard reading: “Thunderstorms with lightning are in the area and we are suspending play until further notice. If you are located in open air seating, proceed calmly to the area located under the stadium seating at this time.”
The NCAA’s lightning safety rules say: “To resume athletics activities, lightning safety experts recommend waiting 30 minutes after both the last sound of thunder and after the last flash of lightning is at least six miles away, and moving away from the venue. If lightning is seen without hearing thunder, lightning may be out of range and therefore less likely to be a significant threat.
“At night, be aware that lightning can be visible at a much greater distance than during the day as clouds are being lit from the inside by lightning. This greater distance may mean that the lightning is no longer a significant threat. At night, use both the sound of thunder and seeing the lightning channel itself to decide on when to reset the 30-minute return-to-play clock before resuming outdoor athletics activities.”
