PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A new bill has been introduced in the Arizona House that would allow golfers the ability to bring their own booze to the course.
Some state lawmakers say House Bill 2411 is an effort to lower prices. The bill, introduced by Republican Rep. Alexander Kolodin, mentions that many courses prevent golfers from bringing outside beverages. Some even acknowledge that liquor is cheaper at the gas station.
The bill argues that letting golfers bring their own alcoholic beverages falls under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Some golfers are happy with the idea.
“I think that golf courses really overcharge the prices on their beverages a lot of times. So, having the ability to go somewhere else and bring your own beverage is a really good way to save money,” said Kayshov Agnihotri, who was golfing at Grass Clippings today.
Another golfer, Justin Yu, says he is new to the sport and this bill would allow him to focus his extra cash on more golf gear.
“We could buy a bunch of new clothes. I could upgrade my slice and get a better coach for my slice and fix my hook,” he said.
But for course general managers, the bill is creating a nightmare.
Martin Ort is the GM of Desert Canyon Golf in Fountain Hills. His day typically includes managing the clubhouse, pro shop, and course maintenance. But now, he is concerned about booze.
“If someone does get intoxicated and they leave the property and cause an accident and heaven forbid they get injured or it’s a fatal accident, the authorities could come to us and ask us questions,” he said.
The bill gives courses the option to allow guests to bring their own alcohol. Ort says he will not be opting in. He says in addition to safety issues, it will also impact his coworkers.
“Ultimately I think the employees are going to take the biggest hit because they are the ones working off tips,” he said.
The bill only applies to courses that already have a liquor license. The bill will hit the Senate floor soon.
