Arizona Cardinals, Kyler Murray show up in second half vs. Dolphins
The Republic’s Theo Mackie and Greg Moore break down the Cardinals’ thriller over the Dolphins.
The Arizona Cardinals have won two straight games to move to 4-4 on the season.
They are tied for the NFC West lead and would host an NFL playoff game if the postseason were to begin before the NFL Week 9 schedule.
Could the team be active at the 2024 NFL trade deadline to bolster its roster in an attempt to make a run to the playoffs?
Could it decide to trade some key players and build for the future?
Check out the latest reports, rumors and speculation surrounding the Cardinals and the NFL trade deadline, which is on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Keep coming back for updates on trade chatter for the Cardinals before the deadline to make deals in the NFL next week.
NFL Week 9 picks: Texans vs Jets | Cowboys vs Falcons | Broncos vs Ravens | Dolphins vs Bills | Saints vs Panthers | Raiders vs Bengals | Chargers vs Browns | Commanders vs Giants | Patriots vs Titans | Bears vs Cardinals | Jaguars vs Eagles | Lions vs Packers | Rams vs Seahawks | Colts vs Vikings | Buccaneers vs Chiefs | The Arizona Republic’s predictions
Mike Jones writes: “A high-level pass rusher can turn a good defense into a great defense, and teams with championship aspirations could look to make a move at the deadline to increase their chances of achieving their goals this postseason. NFC front-runner Detroit needs pass-rushing help with Aidan Hutchinson lost to injury for the season. Atlanta, which leads the NFC South, also needs help at edge rusher. Arizona, which remains in the thick of things in the NFC West, also has been calling teams in search of pass-rushing help.”
Greg Moore writes: “The trade deadline is coming up, and few Arizona Cardinals players could help general manager Monti Ossenfort feather Arizona’s nest like James Conner. Conner has proved himself to be one of the best backs in the NFL, ranking among the leaders in rushing yards, and he’s fully capable of being a three-down back if an offense wanted to feature him that way. But his real value is intangible, which is why I wouldn’t trade him unless it was for a haul.”
Tyler Sullivan writes: “The Cardinals rank 29th in the NFL in pressure rate this season and 27th in sack rate. So, as they currently stand in playoff position, that area of the defense needs to improve rather drastically. The Saints sit at 2-6 after Week 8, and that record could propel them to sell at the deadline. While Chase Young isn’t the player he was when he first stepped into the league as the No. 2 overall pick in 2020, he could provide some depth to the unit at a reasonable cost.”
Theo Mackie writes: “If the Cardinals were to add, they would face intense competition from established contenders in need of edge rushers — teams including the Lions, Eagles, 49ers and Bills. Given the Cardinals’ status on the fringe of contention, it could be difficult for Ossenfort to part with as much draft capital as those Super Bowl hopefuls would consider.”
Donnie Druin writes: “The Cardinals, currently at 4-4 through eight weeks of football season, have seen their front seven decimated with injuries since training camp. In an already thin group of edge rushers, outside linebacker BJ Ojulari suffered a season-ending knee injury during camp, and the defense’s collective health has only gotten worse. Fellow outside linebacker Dennis Gardeck is now done for the season with a torn ACL while starting defensive linemen Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols are on injured reserve as well. First-round pick Darius Robinson has yet to play a down since beginning the season on injured reserve with a calf injury, though he was recently activated to the 53-man roster.”
Cody Benjamin writes: “Jonathan Gannon arguably needs all the help he can get to keep the Arizona Cardinals defense serviceable, and Baker has been a longtime fan favorite for his versatility. He’s due to hit free agency after the season, however, after failing to elicit a long-term commitment from the club, and could be of great value to a contender wanting a proven Pro Bowl talent on the back end.”
It writes: “Earlier in the season it appeared the Cardinals would have been better off being sellers to improve the defense for the future. But Arizona now leads the wide-open NFC West thanks to coach Jonathan Gannon getting the most out of his defense, which is short on recognizable names. The Cardinals could create some separation in the division standings if they add a quality edge rusher. The 28-year-old Key remains a productive player while playing for the struggling one-win Titans. He has three sacks this season, and was a standout player for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, but has gotten lost playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Titans the past three seasons.
Kyle Odegard writes: “The former second-round pick is only 24 years old and would certainly be a guy that would be acquired not only for 2024, but also for the future. Ojulari is the brother of Arizona’s B.J. Ojulari, and they could be a strong duo together for years to come. As for the present, Ojulari would immediately give Arizona a legitimate edge-rushing threat, which would make quarterbacks uncomfortable and also make the job easier for his less-talented brethren on the line. Ojulari is in the final year of his rookie deal, so the cap implications are minimal. If Arizona is really serious about pushing for the playoffs this season, a trade for Ojulari is the move to make.”
Donnie Druin writes: “We’ve already seen names such as Josh Uche moved to Kansas City ahead of the deadline while Haason Reddick is now off the market in New York. Stars in the likes of Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby would take a lot of convincing — and draft capital — to sway from their respective teams. Azeez Ojulari — brother of BJ — has been a popular name in talks, and likely would come cheap.”
