Annabel Croft was left red-faced after accidentally calling Carlos Alcaraz ‘hot’ at Wimbledon.
The Spaniard secured his second successive men’s singles title at Wimbledon by beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Sunday afternoon.
His success at Wimbledon means that the 21-year-old already has four Grand Slam titles to his name having won the French Open this year and the US Open in 2023.
The Spaniard is regarded as the biggest male talent in tennis right now, something that former tennis player and now broadcaster tried to communicate in her interview with the runner-up.
In her question to the Serbian star, she said: “Novak, I know this is not the result you wanted but you were up against such a hot, talented opponent today in Carlos Alcaraz.”
The fans inside Centre Court then laughed as Croft realised her slip of the tongue with a smile on her face.
Alcaraz was left beaming at the accidental compliment, before Croft clarified what she meant, saying: “He was on fire!”
Asked for his thoughts on the final, Djokovic then joked: “That’s what I was about to say – he was very hot today!”
Alcaraz became the youngest player in the Open era to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season (21 years and 70 days). Previous record holder Bjorn Borg was 22 years and 32 days when he won.
Alcaraz is also only the second player in the Open Era to win his first four Grand Slam finals. The other person was Roger Federer.
The double Wimbledon Champion is also just one of three players to hold a winning percentage of 90+ at Wimbledon.
He joins Pete Sampras with a 90 per cent winning record, with only Borg higher on 92.7 per cent.
