Coco Gauff is entering 2025 on a major high, with the American ending the 2024 season with the WTA Finals trophy.
Gauff simply called her 2024 season ‘good’ on social media, having ended the year third in the WTA rankings.
The 20-year-old won three titles to take her career total to nine, with Gauff now in Australia for the 2025 United Cup.
The American star will represent the USA in Perth, with the USA drawn to face Canada and Croatia in Group A.
She will likely use the tournament as preparation for the Australian Open, where her serve will undoubtedly come under the microscope once more.
Gauff worked with Andy Roddick in the off-season last time out, with the 2003 US Open champion now sharing his insight into her serving situation.
“Let me walk you through the progression of how it works,” he said on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast.
“If your second serve is really struggling and is really bad, and your least favourite side to hit the tennis ball on is your forehand side, the worse you are hitting your second serve, the more often you are hitting the second serve, the more reps you are going to get on the forehand side.

“Therefore the forehand looks worse than it actually is. I’m just telling you that. The more she struggles with her serve, the more she is hitting forehands in defensive positions and getting bullied to that side because the book is out.
“Now imagine the book being out and people still not being able to stop it, when she is struggling as much as she is going to struggle.
“I am weirdly more impressed with this year than what she has done at the best of times. Because if this is how she deals with tough times, when it starts rolling at the beginning of the year, getting that win against Iga [Swiatek, at the finals] which is her toughest match-up, is a big, big deal.
“Props to Coco. All of us dummies who question stuff, she is going to be fine, great. I can’t wait for 2025, she has had some time in the off-season to make grip adjustments on the serve.
“Has committed to making that change, as opposed to being guarded with what changes she wanted to make last off-season, maybe protecting a bit more than going after it. There’s a lot to look forward to for Coco.”
Gauff was somewhat at risk of following in the footsteps of a handful of WTA and ATP in peaking too early.
She won her one and only Grand Slam title to date at the 2023 US Open aged just 19, following in the footsteps of Emma Raducanu.
The Briton clinched that same title in 2021 aged 18, but has failed to really push on in her career since then, largely due to several unfortunate injuries.

Gauff, however, has enjoyed plenty of success, and is perhaps the most likely player to push Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek in the WTA rankings next season.
She could have a long list of goals for 2025, including improving her serve, but a rise back to a career-high number two ranking or higher could be top of the pile.
