SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Retailers are getting their holiday rush, but according to the Anderson Police Department (APD), that also comes with increased theft, which they are out patrolling for.
“There’s more shoppers, there’s more people coming and going from the business… Unfortunately, with that, there is also an increase in theft from these retail places,” said APD Detective Darren Mendoza.
According to Detective Mendoza, the people they are catching are often repeat offenders.
They are hoping now that Proposition 36, which will allow felony charges and increased sentences for repeat offenders of certain drug or theft crimes has passed in California, it will alleviate some of those issues.
“People take advantage of the larger amount of customers in the stores and it’s easier for them to kind of sneak through,” said Detective Mendoza.
He said Prop 36 won’t be changing how they operate, but they appreciate the increased accountability towards offenders.
Detective Mendoza also said to not leave any valuables in cars and make sure the doors are locked, and windows are up when out shopping this holiday season.
