SALINA, Kan. (KWCH) – More industrial expansion is on its way to Salina with an anticipated addition of 100 jobs at a new Amazon facility.
The Salina Airport Authority announced Amazon’s purchase of 20 acres to build an approximate 90,000-square-foot distribution facility in the 1800 block of West Water Well Road.
The Salina Airport Authority said the new facility “will serve as a critical component of Amazon’s regional logistics network, further strengthening Salina’s role as a major economic hub in Kansas.”
Plans call for the Amazon facility to anchor Salina’s 80-acre industrial subdivision, currently undergoing infrastructure development.
“The new facility will help power the last mile of Amazon’s fulfillment process by enabling fast, everyday delivery directly to customers’ doorstep,” the airport authority explained. “Packages are transported to delivery stations from Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers and then employees process customer packages for last-mile delivery, helping to speed up delivery for customers in more rural communities.”
With the anticipated jobs, the airport authority said that Amazon employees in fulfillment and transportation earn at least $17 per hour.
The Industrial Center of which the Amazon facility will join is already home to more than 125 businesses employing more than 7,000 workers, the Salina Airport Authority said.
The airport authority sad these businesses contribute to “an annual Gross Regional Product (GRP) of $1.3 billion to the Kansas Economy,” and that “Amazon’s presence will further enhance the region’s growth, innovation and logistics capabilities.”
“This is an exciting milestone for Salina and the entire state of Kansas,” said Pieter Miller, C.M., Executive Director of the Salina Airport Authority in a news release announcing the Amazon expansion. “Amazon’s investment in our industrial center will not only create jobs but will also drive additional development, positioning Salina as a leading regional hub for logistics and advanced industries. The Salina Airport Authority Board of Directors has played a crucial role in guiding the strategic development of the Airport Industrial Center, ensuring that Salina remains a competitive and attractive location for businesses like Amazon.”
Recent industrial expansion in Salina has presented a challenge when it comes to housing for workers that jobs bring into town. Last month, 12 News reported on this issue and the approval of 250 additional units for a highly-anticipated housing development.
