TOXEY, Ala. (WTOK) – Regan Phillips is a four sports student-athlete at South Choctaw Academy who cheers and plays volleyball, basketball, and softball.
She’s involved in several extracurricular activities and helps with community service in her church and community.
Despite all that’s on her plate, she maintains a 3.9 GPA.
“I just had to push myself to be on time, and then have assignments turned in when I’m supposed to and just get ahead of it so it can already be done. I really like to just go ahead and get stuff done, when it’s given to me to do,” Phillips said.
Ask any of her coaches and they’ll tell you that Reagan is a natural-born leader on the courts and on the field.
“Reagan’s in the middle of the girls, and she’s in the middle holding it together. You know, I’m yelling, but she’s in the middle of them yelling. She knows the plays. She knows the volleyball sets. She knows it all. So to have that voice on the court, it makes a huge difference just in everything,” Reagan’s Volleyball and Basketball Coach, Whitley Robinson, said.
“She’s just a natural leader. You know, she leads from the front, [and she] sets the example. When other players, when they mess up, she’ll pick them up and try to pick up the morale when we need it,” Reagan’s Softball Coach, Cole Floyd, said.
As impressive as she is on the courts and on the fields, Regan is equally as impressive in the halls and the classrooms of South Choctaw Academy.
“She’s so well-rounded in all areas I’ve seen students come along who are excellent athletes, just excellent. I’ve seen students come along that are excellent academics, and then I’ve seen excellent leaders, and in all of my 27 years of teaching, Reagan’s among the top five of the ones that have it all,” Reagan’s Teacher, Nina Butler, said.
Ask anyone who knows Reagan to describe her in the theme of their answers will be selfless leadership.
“She helps the younger girls also. She’s just not about the varsity. She’ll help the younger classmen when they come up if they’re having problems with different positions or different skill sets,” Floyd added.
“When the game is down, you see Reagan come in and pick it up. When a student is walking on campus moping, Reagan’s going to be one of the first ones to come along and say something to him and try to pick him up,” Butler said.
“I love to be an example. If anybody needs help, I would like them to come to me and I like them to feel like they shouldn’t have to worry about asking me anything because I’m always open to listen to anything that they have to say,” Phillips said.
Regan plans to attend Coastal Alabama Community College after graduating in the Spring, and she plans to pursue a degree in nursing.
