Alabama football OG Kam Dewberry, a transfer from Texas A&M, is weeks away from competing for the starting left guard position, vacated by the NFL draft-bound Tyler Booker, over UA’s 15 spring practices.
It will be a spirited battle among Dewberry, an SEC veteran, fifth-year senior Geno VanDeMark and a cast of youngsters that includes Brookwood native William Sanders and incoming five-star freshman Michael Carroll.
Dewberry saw significant action in two games against the Crimson Tide during his three-year stretch with the Aggies. He logged reps against multiple UA defenders, including star linebacker Will Anderson in 2022. How did he fare? The Tuscaloosa News evaluated Dewberry’s performances against Alabama, using the All-22 video angle, for the following analysis:
All-22 tape reviewed: 2022 TAMU vs Alabama, 2023 TAMU vs Alabama.
How he was used at TAMU: The Aggies never really committed to Dewberry as a full-time starter, but two different coaching staffs had a hard time keeping him off the field. Typically, there isn’t much playing time available for backup offensive linemen until a lopsided score results in a wholesale substitution of the entire line. Dewberry, however, platooned in meaningful action.
What he did well: Across two games against Alabama, Dewberry put in much of his best work in pass protection. He keeps his head on a swivel to identify multiple pass rushers in his gap, showing the recognition and willingness to come off one block to make another. As a run blocker, Dewberry’s size and strength help him drive bigger defenders off the ball.
What he didn’t do well: Dewberry had repeated balance issues against the Crimson Tide. Often due to lunging and getting overextended, Dewberry found himself on the ground too much. When he didn’t fall, his tendency to get off-balance still made it difficult for him to sustain blocks. The issue showed up more often in run blocking than pass blocking. It’s also worth noting that Dewberry might have improved in this area in 2024, as All-22 video on his junior season was unavailable.
How he fits at Alabama: While Dewberry brings a level of game experience that will come in handy, he’s no lock for a starting role. At 330 pounds, he’s high on power but low on athleticism, which could make for a shoehorn fit in the UA offense. There’s no reason to think this won’t be a close competition in spring practice, but at worst, Dewberry should provide UA with solid depth in the way that VanDeMark did a year ago.
