THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) – ALDI officially opened the doors to its first store in Thomasville Thursday, with several residents excited about the lower food prices and new job opportunities the store is offering.
A line wrapped around the store’s parking lot, with over 350 residents in attendance, ready to enter the new store. The first 100 customers received gift cards and goodie bags.
One resident even said they had been waiting outside the store since 10 p.m. Wednesday for it to open.
“I think it going to open doors for price changes,” Mark Troyer said. “You’re not going to the store and spending your whole weeks wages on one grocery trip.”
Troyer camped outside Aldi’s doors for almost 12 hours, he said he is happy to have healthy food options that won’t break his wallet.
“It seems like their produce is a lot more affordable here,” Troyer said.
Virginia Ivey, a customer waiting in the long line shared with WCTV how having more store choices is important.
“Well I’m glad we needed another grocery store,” Ivey said. One resident from Whigham, Ga shared that she has been traveling over 45 minutes to shop at a local Aldi, she says this will take a lot of stress off of grocery shopping.
“To have it that closer is going to be so much easier for me i can’t wait I’m so excited,” Teresa Crosson said.
Additionally, the store brings 15 full-time and part-time positions with a starting pay of $17.
More news out of South Georgia:
Heather Moore, Loxley vice president for ALDI said she hopes the store will save residents money and also time.
“For the ones that have been traveling, certainly there is a financial output but time also time is precious, whether you want to watch the game or pick your kids up from school,” Moore said.
According to an ALDI press release, the store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
