Former Alabama football defensive back DeVonta Smith has reportedly found his new college home. Smith will transfer to Notre Dame, according to multiple reports.

Pete Nakos of On3 first reported the move. Smith, one of Alabama’s starting safeties this season, entered the portal when the current entry window opened, following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season.

Smith spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa. He battled injuries in 2023, but stuck around through the change in coaching staffs and finally got on the field this season.

He was UA’s primary starter at the safety position Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack refers to as the “husky.” Smith accounted for 30 tackles, one forced fumble and five pass breakups in 2024.

Smith will join a Notre Dame team that will coming off an appearance in the College Football Playoff. The Fighting Irish will open the CFP with a home first-round game against Indiana, as the No. 5 seed in the event.

Meanwhile, Alabama’s 2024 season still hasn’t ended. The Crimson Tide will face Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl, after missing the CFP field by one spot due to losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

That game is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT on Dec. 31 in Tampa. It will be aired on ESPN.

The transfer portal remains open for undergraduate entry through Dec. 29.
