Alabama football defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe has filed the paperwork to enter the transfer portal, sources with knowledge of the situation told AL.com.
Mbakwe was a five-star defensive back in the 2024 recruiting class from Clay-Chalkville High School. The 5-11, 192-pound cornerback saw time on defense in 10 of the 12 games, tallying 221 snaps per Pro Football Focus.
Mbakwe tallied 12 tackles and one interception in 2024.
Not only was he a significant recruit, but he also played a vital role in Alabama re-landing Ryan Williams. Alabama director of player personnel Bob Welton described Mbakwe as “the hidden factor.”
“A&M couldn’t say it,” Welton told AL.com in September. “Auburn, he knew some people there, but not like (Mbakwe). I thought Jaylen has always been a quiet piece to (recruiting Ryan Williams).”
Mbakwe is the latest defensive back to enter the transfer portal since it opened a week ago. He joins starting nickel defensive back DeVonta Smith as well as reserve cornerback Jahlil Hurley. Other notable players who have entered the transfer portal include running back Justice Haynes and receiver Kendrick Law.
The transfer portal will remain open for two more weeks.
