HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – One Alabama A&M football player is still at UAB Hospital five days after being taken off the field at the Magic City Classic on a stretcher.
Medrick Burnett Jr. is a linebacker in his first season with A&M. Burnett was hurt during Saturday’s game, but it wasn’t clear right away just how serious that injury was.
In a statement from Athletic Director Dr. Paul Bryant, he said thankfully Burnett is in stable condition.
Alabama A&M’s football head coach Connell Mayor said they can’t say much due to health privacy laws.
However, he said they’re doing what they can to help everyone involved during this tough time.
“We’ve got to send up our prayers. I went back after the game and stayed with him. I picked up his parents up from the airport, and stayed with him Sunday for a while before I came back here,” he said. “Coach Howell and Coach Thornton went down and stayed with him for four hours, so we’re doing all we can do and control what we can control. We [have] to understand that the Lord [has] everything under control and we [have] to do what we can do to just play football and go to school.”
The California native transferred from Grambling before this season.
That incident prompted the school to hold a fundraiser on his behalf, which you can donate to by clicking this link.
