Tiretown Golf Charities, an Akron-based organization that supports golf enthusiasts of all backgrounds and is recognized as the largest predominantly Black golf club in the Midwest, has been named the PGA TOUR 2024 Charity of the Year, according to a statement from the PGA TOUR Champions.
“We are thrilled to recognize Tiretown Golf Charities as the 2024 PGA TOUR Champions Charity of the Year,” PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady said in the statement. “The organization’s commitment to the Northeast Ohio community is unmatched, including the numerous Tiretown volunteers working at the Kaulig Companies Championship each year. Tiretown’s dedication to supporting Akron youth – from scholarship programs to partnerships with local schools – exemplifies the PGA TOUR Champions ethos of making a difference in communities where we play.”
Tiretown Golf Charities received a $30,000 donation for being named last year’s award recipient. The funds will reportedly be used to support golf programs at local Akron high schools by providing uniforms, transportation to matches and equipment for the new teams.
“The nearly 200 members of Tiretown Golf Club are thrilled to be recognized by PGA TOUR Champions for our commitment to the young men and women in the Greater Akron community,” Tiretown President Ralph Paulk said in the statement. “As the largest Black golf club in the country, we envision a future in which there are no barriers for young people of color to succeed if they are willing to invest the time and effort. We appreciate this honor and recognize our mission is ongoing – that the challenges ahead are daunting, but not insurmountable.”
The award celebrates Tiretown Golf Charities’ impact on the local community, whether through academic scholarships, youth programming or volunteering.
Last year, Tiretown Golf Charities provided more than 60 volunteers to Northern Ohio Golf Charities in support of the Kaulig Companies Championship.
Tiretown Golf Club, established in 1950, has helped foster interest and opportunity in golf for young Akron golfers by doing such things as reviving Buchtel High School’s golf program and establishing a scholarship program that provides funding for five years of college funding to qualified high school seniors
