Credit experts are urging people to consider a budget as they shop for the holidays. Rod Griffin, Senior Director of Consumer Education and Advocacy with Experian, said it’s the impulse buying that gets us in trouble.
“Nine out of ten people tell us that those adverts, that those ads for sales tempt them to spend more than they should,” he said. “So, (it) plays a big part.”
Griffin also recommends creating a spending plan that includes friends and family.
“With inflation being what it has been has put a pinch on spending and on our budgetsl,” he said. And so, talk to them and say, ‘Hey, look, I can’t spend quite as much this year.’ You will be surprised, I think, at how many people that you talk to will say, ‘Yeah, I’m in the same place.’”
Griffin said more than half the people Experian surveyed plan to use credit for holiday expenses. He recommends you have a plan for how to quickly pay it off.
