A family travel nightmare was no match for Adam Schefter.
Despite facing a tumultuous journey home due to Friday’s global tech chaos, the ESPN NFL insider appeared on Monday’s episode of “The Pat McAfee Show” from a cab he hired to take his family from Detroit to New York following two flight cancellations.
Normally seen in a suit, he joined McAfee, who referred to the veteran sportscaster wearing a hoodie, as “Casual Schefty,” to talk NFL updates as training camp approaches, all while smiling and recounting his family’s travel ordeal.
“I’ve never seen a scene like I saw at Detroit Metro. We were in line for our flight [feed freezes]…for six hours before they canceled our flight at 1 in the morning,” Schefter explained. “It looked like a nightclub, everybody out trying to get an Uber or a Lyft or a cab or whatever it is.”
Got back to our hotel at 2:30 in the morning, booked for another flight today that was canceled. So I hired a cab to drive us back to New York. We are right now in Pennsylvania, four hours out.”
Schefter, who had been in Michigan “taking care of business for his young daughter,” explained that their flight from Detroit to New York was one of many canceled flights Sunday, describing the chaos as a “complete meltdown.”
“And these airlines, zero honesty, zero transparency. And what’s going on is a travesty,” he continued. “I’m just telling you, I’ve spoken to other people at other airports, it’s a disaster right now.”
Adding urgency to their predicament, Schefter’s wife Sharri, who has Type 1 diabetes, had just enough insulin for one more day.
While McAfee, the WWE commentator and daily sports talk show host, made light of the situation, giving his buddy kudos for “figuring it out,” he also expressed sympathy.
“We’re sorry that you and your family are going through that—that’s crazy to think about the real-life implications with the insulin, the diabetes, and you know, public transportation, especially what commercial airlines are, is potentially affecting somebody’s life,” he said.
“So the fact that you, Suit, decided to figure it out — ‘We’ll drive this entire thing’ — I love that out of you Schefty.”
