Bobby Acosta has resigned from his duties as head football coach at St. John Vianney after one season on the job, the school announced Saturday.
In the statement, Acosta said, “As the head football coach at St. John Vianney High School, I was deeply committed to the football program. Recently, I have had personal circumstances to attend to and felt it best to resign from my position.”
The coach’s departure caught administrators by surprise at the Monmouth County school.
“This sudden announcement was unexpected and we will begin the search for a new head coach immediately,” the school said in a press release.
Acosta was one of the most noteworthy hirings in the state before last season. He brought 20 years of coaching experience, including jobs in the NFL, NCAA Divisions 1 and 3 and IMG Academy in Florida.
He served internships with the Jets in 2010 and the Cleveland Browns in 2007 and led IMG to a consensus No. 1 national ranking in his first season there.
Acosta guided St. John Viannney to a 9-4 record last fall, including a dramatic victory over Red Bank Catholic in the NJSIAA Non-Public, Group B quarterfinals before a loss to Pope John in the semifinals.
