ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – 2024 has seen the closure of three West Texas golf courses; Nueva Vista, Ranchland Hills, and Sunset Golf and Country Club.
Sunset Golf and Country Club opened to Odessans in 1954.
For 70 years members and their guests have made their way through 7,765 yards worth of range, some even hitting that one-in-a-million shot.
The course was purchased by a new owner in 2012, now nearly 12 years after that change the course was sold once again.
“they were selling and we were purchasing”
Ector County ISD purchased the property two months ago for future developments at ECISD.
A similar exchange was made in Midland in 2019 when the school district approved the purchase of Ranchland Hills for future school developments.
That exchange was met with lots of backlash from the golf community.
However, according to ECISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri, the Odessa purchase seems to have gone much smoother.
“The public was well aware, this property has been on the market for quite a few years so it wasn’t a surprise to anyone that it was going to be sold…in fact there was a sale sign on the property”
According to a letter sent to golfers, Sunset will close when the last person finishes play on August 1st.
As far as ECISD’s future plans with this property CBS7 will continue to follow any decisions made and update you as we learn more.
