LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Daxton Larimore is just like any kid here in Southwest Louisiana, an action packed 5 year-old with a heart for football, especially the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I swear its like he is their good luck charm,” said Daxton’s father Dillion Larimore. “They started winning. They won their first Super Bowl when he was born. We watched the Super Bowl. We decked him and the room in Chiefs gear.”
And for Daxton, his goal is pretty clear.
When asked if he wants to play football, Daxton said definitely.
When asked if he wants to play for the Chiefs, Daxton uttered an even louder yes.
But Daxton has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare, life-threatening heart condition, where one side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.
“That will be the toughest day for us,” says Larimore. “When we have to tell him that he can’t. That is the downside of this. His love for sports is so big.”
Daxton has received all of his cardiac care in Memphis, which has not been easy for the Moss Bluff-based family.
“You almost have to look at it as, they have to pay for a whole second way of living, so not only are the paying for their home and their bills, and everything at their own personal house,” says Stacie Adams, Executive Director for the Local Heart Foundation. “But then now their added where they have to travel to Houston, or New Orleans or Memphis Tennessee, and they have to pay for gas and a place to stay.”
That is where the Local Heart Foundation came in in a clutch.
The Lake Charles organization provides financial aid to hundreds of heart patients seeking care at out-of-state facilities.
As a thank you, the Larimer’s decided to give the ball back this past holiday season.
All of the donations collected from their annual Christmas light display were forwarded to the local heart foundation
“We ended up raising over $2,300 and that is well above what we normally do,” said Larimer.
The Larimer’s hope one day karma will return the favor, as they hope Daxton will be approved for the transplant list.
Just like Chiefs continue their fight for their third straight Super Bowl, Daxton will follow right behind.
“He just goes out there and runs around, with a smile on his face the entire time” Larimer said.
As he continues his fight for his heart.
