FRESNO, Calif (FOX26) — For over 14 decades, horse racing has been a staple event at the Big Fresno Fair.

Since 1883, the event has drawn thousands of spectators each year. However, after the tragic deaths of three horses during last year’s fair, the Big Fresno Fair has announced that horse racing will not be part of this year’s lineup.

In a statement, fair officials cited multiple factors for the decision:

“The uncertainty regarding the availability of horses, increased financial risk, and the lack of a racing management collective for Northern California fairs.” Fair officials said.

With horse racing no longer on the schedule, many are left wondering what could take its place.

A Potential New Racing Alternative?

Sanjay Singh, organizer of the Motor Rallycross in Fresno and a member of the Sports Club of America, sees an opportunity for a new kind of competition.

“I’d like to see anything where I can see four wheels on the ground and racing—we’re down,” Singh said.

His club offers an adrenaline-fueled alternative to traditional horse racing, providing a safe and controlled environment for motorsports enthusiasts.

“It takes people off the streets that would be racing light to light or whatever. Compared to this, this has a hundred times greater thrill than stepping on a gas pedal and potentially hurting somebody on the road, getting a ticket, or totaling your car,” Singh explained.

Singh, who inherited his passion for racing from his father, has passed it down to his daughter and other local racers. Currently, his club races on the track’s infield, but he believes the experience would be even better on a smoother track.

“You come over here, race in a safe environment, and you get more thrill while hanging out with great people,” he said.

Singh held his first trial race in 2024, and this weekend, March 1st and 2nd, marks the start of their championship season.

With a full schedule ahead, Singh hopes to bring his event to the Big Fresno Fair in the future.

What’s Next for the Big Fresno Fair?

As of now, the fair has not announced a replacement for horse racing.

Whether it will introduce a new attraction or leave the schedule open remains to be seen.
