If the Philadelphia 76ers don’t make any drastic trades before the deadline, they could turn to the buyout market to add more help.
That’s why players like D’Angelo Russell have been floated as targets. He might not be available yet, but a lot can change between now and the buyout deadline a few months from now.
Other players, like Toronto Raptors guard Bruce Brown, could also hit the buyout market. Marc Stein reported on The Stein Line what Brown’s trade market is.
“Other veterans believed to be available for second-round draft compensation with 39 days to go until the trade deadline include Valančiūnas and Brogdon, Toronto’s Kelly Olynyk and Bruce Brown and Utah’s Jordan Clarkson,” Stein wrote.
It remains to be seen if Brown is currently worth that. He’s an NBA champion, but he’s a rotation player who arguably makes more money than he deserves.
The Sixers have the contracts to trade for Brown outright, but that doesn’t seem like the wisest move. If the Raptors don’t find a trade partner for Brown, that could lead to a buyout. If that’s how things turn out, the Sixers should pounce on it right away.
However, other dominoes would have to fall for such a union to happen.
The Sixers are currently a first-apron team, meaning they can’t sign anyone who makes more than the taxpayer mid-level exception. Brown makes $23 million this season, so legally, the Sixers can’t sign him outright.
However, because their payroll is $182.7 million, the Sixers must shed only $4.6 million to get under the apron. That wouldn’t be super difficult to pull off.
If they find takers for the likes of Eric Gordon, along with one of Kyle Lowry or Reggie Jackson, that would be enough to get them under the apron.
It could also open up roster spots they can use for other available free agents. Because none of those three has worked out too well, that would be another benefit from such a trade.
