Remember 12-3-30? The popular TikTok treadmill workout that took the first half of this decade by storm? Well, it’s officially been dethroned…by yet another catchy formula. Meet 30-30-30, the latest wellness craze that’s seen a 175 percent increase in search, according to Google data analyzed by PureGym. “TikTok’s influence on health and fitness trends continues to be seen, with the 30-30-30 rule set to be something many people live by in 2025.” (Meanwhile, ‘12-3-30’ experienced a 55 percent drop in search over the past 12 months.) For optimal health and fat loss, the “rule” suggests eating 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up, followed by 30 minutes of steady-state cardiovascular exercise like walking. It was first coined back in 2010 thanks to the weight-loss book The 4-Hour Body by Timothy Ferriss. Its recent rise in fame can be attributed to biologist and businessman Gary Brecka who featured it in a 2024 TikTok clip that garnered over 5M views.
Whether their popularity stems from a collective desire to find a more approachable way to work out or they’re just cute, catchy and hard to forget, people clearly love a number-based lifestyle rule. In addition to 30-30-30 which saw an uptick worldwide, two other workout formulas stood out amongst the top trending workout searches in the U.S., according to Google’s 2024 Year In Search data: the 2-2-10 workout method and the 3-2-1 workout method.
Both referring to a weekly workout breakdown, the 2-2-10 method suggests doing two days of strength training mixed in with two days of HIIT training, plus 10K steps daily. The 3-2-1 method suggests doing three days of strength training mixed in with two days of Pilates, plus one day of conditioning. Both routines claim to help gym-goers achieve noticeable fitness results, and, thanks to the power of TikTok, people are starting to take note.
