Thanks to a leaderboard stacked with star power, Sunday at the 2024 Olympic men’s golf competition in Paris is going to be fun.
Two-time major champions Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm lead the way at 14 under, however, there are plenty of the game’s best nipping at their heels: Tommy Fleetwood is one back, Hideki Matsuyama is three back, while Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim are all four back.
Only three positions matter when all is said and done, so expect players within shouting distance to play aggressive golf over the final 18 holes.
If you missed any of the early-morning coverage from Paris, no worries, we have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know from the third round of the Olympic men’s golf competition.

Xander Schauffele is the hottest player on Earth, and that’s saying something with how Scottie Scheffler has played this year. After winning his first major at the PGA Championship, Schauffele earned the title of Champion Golfer of the Year last month at Royal Troon.
Now, he’s position to win another gold medal.
Schauffele’s third round got off to a slow start as he played his first 11 holes even par. But then he got it going. After a birdie on 12, Schauffele walked in an eagle putt on the par-5 14th to reach 3 under on the day and 14 under total.
“I haven’t gotten too far, thinking that far,” he said when asked where the second medal would go. “But if I was to take a wild guess, I’m sure it would go right next to where the first one is.”
Schauffele made par on his final four holes and will tee off Sunday tied for the lead. Another gold medal would be the perfect final chapter to the American’s 2024 story. (Of course, he could win the FedEx Cup and the accompanying hefty paycheck, which would be pretty cool, too.)
On the LIV circuit, Rahm has played well all year. But when he joined the rest of the golf world for the major championships, he struggled early in the summer. He tied for 45th at the Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship before withdrawing from the U.S. Open due to injury.
However, a top-10 finish at Royal Troon has been a turning point.
Rahm won his first LIV event in the UK last week and now he’s leading through 54 holes at Le Golf National with a chance to add a gold medal to his resume.
On Saturday, the Spaniard made four birdies and a bogey on his opening nine to go out with a 3-under 33. After making the turn, Rahm added birdies on 13 and 14 before dropping a shot at 15 thanks to a sloppy three-putt.
The exclamation point for Rahm came on the 17th when he drained a 36-foot putt for birdie to get back to 14 under and in a tie for the lead.
“I’ve been playing good all year, but I haven’t been able to give myself the best chances,” he said. “For this last month, to be playing as good as I have, and slowly get better; the win last week, and give myself an opportunity this week, as well, is very, very gratifying. It’s nice to see things going so well for the last month, and after having won to be in this position again so quickly.”
A gold medal for Rahm would make up for his mediocre major season.
Have a day, Nicolai Hojgaard.
The Dane scorched Le Golf National Saturday, collecting five birdies in a six-hole stretch on his front nine — Nos. 4-9 — before two more birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th coming home. His 9-under 62 tied the course record — his brother Rasmus also shot 62 in 2022 at the Open de France — and has him in a fantastic spot to go medal-chasing during the final round Sunday.
“I was there in ’22 when (Rasmus) was close to winning here,” he said. “So I saw it all, how he handled things and how the course was playing. It’s playing pretty similar. Cool to see that I convinced myself to play a really good round today and see myself hit good shots coming in after a couple of tough days.”
Hojgaard was clicking in every area of his game. During round three, he ranked first in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, third in SG: Approach, first in SG: Around the Green and 18th in SG: Putting.
The perfect recipe for a low score.
Tommy Fleetwood: 13 under, 3rd
Hideki Matsuyama: 11 under, T-4
Rory McIlroy: 10 under, T-6
“The story of the first two days was the mistakes and today I went out with the mindset of trying to limit those mistakes, which I did,” McIlroy said. “It was a really solid round of golf and puts me in contention for a medal tomorrow.”
Scottie Scheffler: 10 under, T-6
“I’d like to be leading,” Scheffler said. “I feel like I haven’t had my best stuff the last few days but I’ve done enough to hang in there and stay in the tournament. Around this course, you can get hot. You saw Nicolai had a really nice round today, and I’m going to need something like that tomorrow if I’m going to be holding a medal.”
Tom Kim: 10 under, T-6
Ludvig Aberg: 9 under, T-10
