Something good is happening in the world of work. More and more companies are posting jobs—many good-paying, remote jobs—where the lack of a college degree is no longer a barrier to entry. Based on the requirements listed within the five available remote jobs below, companies have figured out what many have long since known. Education matters, but experience matters more.
Given that 62% of Americans lack a college degree, employers are getting more creative with filling jobs to ensure there will be an adequate employee-candidate base well into the future. Labor shortages, among other factors, are causing some hiring managers and supervisors to prioritize the weighted value of experience and skills above education. This is happening for traditional and remote jobs as well.
As you’ll see with the available remote jobs listed below—companies aren’t only ready to pay annual salaries of $200,000 up to $382,000 to attract the right talent, these employers are offering new hires great benefit packages, opportunities for remote work and (in some instances) forgoing the college-degree requirement completely.

It’s becoming easier to secure a high-paying job—even remote jobs—without having a college degree. This 2024 compensation report by Payscale informs that, “34 percent of organizations say they have removed degree requirements while another 41 percent say that it depends on the job. Overall, only a minority of organizations in 2024 say they still require a college degree for all salaried positions.”
Payscale’s report goes on to state, “A rising trend in recent years is the shift to skills-based talent management, which refers to hiring and employee redeployment processes that emphasize capabilities over education or titles. Skills-based talent management has garnered increased interest because of its potential to solve labor shortages and increase business agility. Organizations with a clear understanding of the skills needed to do the jobs that they need done can respond to skills gaps with learning and development, organize business needs around people rather than jobs, and more easily identify talent to promote from within.”
Employers still desire—and need—a well-informed and educated workforce; it’s just that the value and appreciation for how that education is received has evolved.
Employers are changing because the times are changing. Remote work arrangements and the non-degree requirement represent a paradigm shift with both employers and employees in the workforce.
Employers aren’t as eager to push aside viable, experienced candidates simply because they lack a college degree. They have learned that even when a new employee comes in with a degree, a lot of learning and training must still occur. A college degree does not eliminate the need for all on-the-job or ongoing/continual learning.
Instead of blanket degree requirements, there is a trend toward training to address noticeable skill gaps as well as online and in-person—just in time—training, certifications, leadership and executive development workshops, etc.
With these options, the correlation between learning and application can be more quickly applied and observed, and the timing for the learning programs is significantly condensed when compared to years-long degree programs.
Senior leaders and executives are receiving education; they’re simply receiving it in methods, formats and approaches that are proving more readily accessible, more timely and immediately transferrable to the needs of the organization and the employees holding the jobs.
Alternative methods and approaches to learning and education are being embraced. Just as we’ve experienced with remote work—the foundation for education and how learning occurs is shifting. While there is still a higher premium on college degrees, and the perceived elevated value they bring, it’s clear that experience (hands-on, real-world experience) holds a value and premium all its own.
Given the prevailing attitudes and traditions, the move towards skills-based hiring will take some time before it’s fully embedded within an organization’s culture, and surely there will be pushback with this. The good news is that several major corporations are already making this shift (e.g., Google, IBM, Tesla, GM, Accenture, etc.).
If you desire a high-paying remote job and don’t have a college degree, you have more options (given you have the work experience). Today, you have positions like the five above to consider. And tomorrow, you will have increasingly more.
