Nearly half of U.S. employers have joined a growing number of companies dropping degree requirements … [+]
The privilege of work from home was at one time, typically associated with higher-income earners in white collar roles who have acquired a minimum level of degree education, at the least.
But over the past few years, that perspective has quickly evolved.
The pendulum is now swinging in favor of non-degree holders who have acquired the necessary experience, skills, and what are known as “career certificates” (certifications that demonstrate completion of in-demand job skills training).
Nearly half of companies (45%) withdrew degree requirements from some of their job specifications this year, per an Intelligent.com survey of 800 U.S. employers, while 55% already eliminated bachelor’s degree requirements in 2023. In fact, four in five employers agree that they value a candidate’s experience more than their educational status.
There are plenty of brilliant candidates who do not have four-year degrees, yet have climbed the ranks and excelled in their professions; while employers also recognize that there are tons of graduates who they’ve unfortunately had to subsequently fire after a few months of work, due to their lack of soft skills, growth mindset, and work ethic.
However, a word of caution: although these employers do not explicitly state that a degree is necessary, some might prefer degree holders to those without one, and you may find it harder to stand out in the competition of the job market. Therefore, it is critical to your success as a job-seeker to build on your skills, develop a portfolio for strong tangible evidence of your experience, and always maintain a growth mindset as these will make up for your lack of degree education.
Below are some examples of work-from-home jobs that do not require you to have a degree in 2024 (some are strictly freelance, others can be done as side hustle jobs, and others can be performed either working for an organization in the traditional employee sense, or on your own as an independent contractor/freelancer):
The amazing thing is that many of these work-from-home jobs actually pay more than the U.S. median salary (about $59,000). For example, roles such as customer success manager pay $125,168 on average, while a graphic designer hovers around $107,000 in the United States, according to estimates from Salary.com.
Employers prize experience and skills over educational status
The most important thing, however, is not to try to cut corners and gain quick wins by seeking to land a work from home job that pays well without a degree, without any ambition to develop yourself further. The motive behind your job search should be to secure a role that pays a high income while affording you the opportunity to build and refine your expertise in more creative ways.
