Daoust Flies to Rare Air

Drew Daoust (1) went where no county player has gone before when he surpassed 2,000 career points on Feb. 8 with more than a season left in his career. The junior guard for Southern Door earned his second Packerland Player of the Year award, and entered his senior season poised to finish as one of the top scorers in Wisconsin prep history. Eagles Win Packerland, Regional Titles

Bays Complete Championship Sweep

For the second straight year the Sister Bay Bays took home all the hardware in the Door County League. The Bays rode the arm of Sam Forkert (pictured) to win their seventh regular season title in the last 11 seasons. It was the third time they’ve swept the regular season and postseason trophies. Stout Wins Half Marathon

Vikings Tie for Packerland Title, Win Regional

It came down to the final extra innings of the regular season when Gibraltar/Washington Island climbed into a share of the Packerland Conference championship on May 23. That’s when Gibraltar/Washington Island’s Bennett Isaacson-Krueger (2) hit a ground ball to score Marshall Maltby and lift Gibraltar over Kewaunee. The Vikings finished 12-4 to tie Algoma and Kewaunee atop the conference standings. Rikkola Clears 1,000

Sevastopol’s Naomi Rikkola (20) scored a game-high 36 points Feb. 3 as she surpassed 1,000 career points. Just a junior, Rikkola had already placed herself among the top girls basketball players in local history with a year left to play. United, Clippers Win Regional Soccer Titles

(From left) Gibraltar/Sevastopol’s Gabe Peterson (9) and Sturgeon Bay’s Will Estes (7) battle for the ball at midfield during the Oct. 31 WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal. For the Clippers it was old hat, but for Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer the regional title they earned in October was the first since 2010. But it was their conference rival Sturgeon Bay that ended their run in the sectional round of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs with a 4-0 victory. Girls Head to State Wrestling Tourney

Two Door County girls made the podium at this year’s WIAA state girls wrestling tournament. Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol’s Tiani LeMieux (pictured) placed second at 138 pounds, losing the title match on a pin by Badger’s Carley Ceshker. LeMieux finished the season with a record of 36-6 and was named the Paackerland Conference Wrestler of the Year. Southern Door’s Hailey Veeser finished fourth at 152 pounds. Veeser ended the season 33-7. Submitted.
