Day four of the 2024 Paris Olympics featured more action across multiple sports from Virginia athletes. In tennis and swimming, the Cavaliers found success and disappointment. In soccer, Joe Bell saw his Olympics come to an end, while Emily Sonnett is looking ahead to the final group stage game of the tournament tomorrow.

Here are all the results from Tuesday’s action plus a look ahead at Wednesday’s schedule.

OVERALL CAVALIER MEDAL COUNT: 3

SWIMMING

Virginia swimmers did not feature in any finals on Tuesday but still featured in multiple races. Gretchen Walsh, already a two-time silver medalist in Paris, finished third in her morning prelim heat of the 100-meter freestyle before qualifying for Wednesday’s final with the eighth-fastest semifinal time. Fellow American Torri Huske, who beat Walsh in the 100-meter butterfly, also qualified for the final just ahead of Walsh by one one-hundredth of a second. The pair were just over half a second behind the top qualifying time.

2025 Virginia swimming commit Thomas Heilman was also in the pool on Tuesday, competing in the prelims and semifinals of the men’s 200-meter butterfly. His prelim time ranked 11th in the field, and he did not improve enough in the semifinals to qualify for the eight-man final. He finished .25 seconds behind the eighth-place qualifier. Heilman will also compete in the 100-meter butterfly later in this Olympics.

TENNIS

Danielle Collins, the No. 8 seed in women’s singles, won again on Tuesday, advancing to the quarterfinals with her win over unseeded Camila Osorio of Colombia. Collins won the first set 6-0, but Osorio fought back to win the second set 6-4. A 6-3 final set win for Collins takes her to the quarterfinals for a matchup with No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland. In seven meetings, Collins has managed just one win over Swiatek which came back in 2022 in the Australian Open Semifinal. They last faced off at Indian Wells earlier this year, a 6-3, 6-0 win for the Pole. 

The winner of Collins-Swiatek will face either unseeded Angelique Kerber of Germany or No. 6 seed Qinwen Zheng of China. Zheng defeated former Cavalier and No. 11 seed Emma Navarro on Tuesday. Navarro won the first set in a tiebreaker and went up a break in the second set. She had two different service games with a chance to close out the match in the second set, but she was unable to do so. She eventually lost the set in a tiebreaker. Zheng took control in the third set, winning 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Collins has a busy day ahead of her on Wednesday with her singles quarterfinal against Swiatek scheduled for 9 a.m. quickly followed by a second-round doubles match at noon. 

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Emily Sonnett and the No. 5 U.S. women’s soccer team will face No. 12 Australia in the final game of the group stage on Wednesday. Sonnett has played 71 minutes off the bench through two games. 

The Americans have already advanced to the knockout stage after winning their first two games, but they can lock up the top spot in Group B with a win or draw. The Australians are currently in third in the group but are second among the third-place teams which would advance them to the quarterfinals.

MEN’S SOCCER

Joe Bell’s Olympics came to an end on Tuesday as New Zealand was eliminated from the men’s soccer tournament. New Zealand lost 3-0 to France in its final game, finishing behind the French and Americans in Group A. Bell played all 90 minutes against the French and was graded as the team’s best player of the game.

3X3 BASKETBALL

Former Virginia women’s basketball player Tammi Reiss is an assistant coach for Team USA’s 3×3 women’s basketball team. The Americans lost their first of seven pool play games on Tuesday, falling 17-13 to Germany. Play resumes on Wednesday with a matchup against Azerbaijan which lost to Spain 18-16 in its opener.
