WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Labor Day weekend has begun for travelers.
Discover Monroe-West Monroe is looking forward to welcoming visitors with scheduled events. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Friday (Aug. 30) is the peak of travel, and the agency expects to screen more than two million travelers nationwide.
As for the entire holiday travel period, which TSA has scheduled for Aug. 29 – Sept. 4, 2024, the agency is prepared to screen more than 17 million people.
Discover Monroe-West Monroe President and CEO Alana Cooper says during this holiday, Ouachita Parish gets more visitors traveling by car than by airplane.
“The majority of our travelers drive. We have airlift coming into here, which is great, and we have people who do fly in, but the majority of our travelers like leisure or for competitions – the majority, vast majority are driving,” said Cooper. “Within a five to seven-hour drive range is really good for our target market; for just like that leisure – ‘maybe I want to get out of town for the weekend. I just want to go do something different.”
The Twin Cities are anticipating travelers to come to town for the Cotton Stakes Cutting event, which begins Sept. 1 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center. It’ll last through Sept. 7, 2024. According to Discover Monroe-West Monroe, this event has an estimated economic impact of more than $300,000 for Ouachita Parish.
