Not all 2-year-olds have aspirations of running in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on the first Saturday in May. Some have distance limitations, though that doesn’t mean they cannot have a highly productive career as a sprinter. In Sunday’s Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar, six 2-year-old sprinters will square off in a test that could propel them toward a successful 3-year-old campaign in one-turn stakes or, perhaps, land them on the Triple Crown trail.

1. McKinzie Street: Tired and finished third when tested around two turns in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes Presented by DK Horse. Was second before that in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs and figures to be a main threat here.

2. Dr Ruben M: He needed four cracks to break his maiden, finally winning at a two-turn mile. Usually shows early speed and the faster fractions at this distance could work against him while stepping up in class.

JOCKEY: Edwin Maldonado; TRAINER: Doug O’Neill

3. Kalea Bay: He’s trained by Bob Baffert, who has won this stakes 13 times, including the last three editions and seven of the last nine. So that alone makes him a contender. Come off a powerful maiden win in his third start in fast time. He’s sired by a Kentucky Derby/Breeders’ Cup Classic winner in Authentic so the added furlong should not be a factor.

4. Madaket Road: He’s a first-time starter, which normally does not bode well for his chances in a graded stakes. But he’s trained by Baffert and is turning in bullet workouts, so ignoring him could be a big mistake in a field where no one has more than one win.

JOCKEY: Antonio Fresu; TRAINER: Bob Baffert

5. Bullard: Closed sharply to win his debut, rallying from seventh in a six-furlong sprint on this track. The added furlong should be to his benefit but he probably will need a quick pace in front of him to prevail.

JOCKEY: Umberto Rispoli; TRAINER: Michael McCarthy

6. Maximus: Was an easy debut winner at Del Mar by 9 1/4 lengths. But that was a restricted maiden race and the time was a cut below the top contenders. Others are more appealing despite the lopsided win.
