JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – More than a year after funding was set aside for the work, an 18-hole disc golf course is expected to officially open next week in Jackson.

The course is located at Livingston Park next the Jackson Zoological Park. It will be the first 18-hole facility in the capital city, said Parks and Recreation Director Dr. Abram Muhammad.

“We’re looking at doing an official opening of the course next week, weather permitting,” he said. “There’s already been some play to take place [and it’s] getting great reviews.”

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association’s website, the sport combines aspects of Frisbee and traditional golf. Players attempt to throw a Frisbee-shaped disc from a tee to a target. The fewer the throws it takes to hit the target, the better.

Muhammad said the city is working to get international certification for the park, which would allow Jackson to host not only local and state tournaments, but international competitions.

“It’s another feature added next to the zoo,” he said. “The city… is very proud and pleased to be able to offer [a place to play] what is considered the second-fastest growing sport in America.”

The Jackson City Council approved spending $29,000 on the course back in August 2023.

While that course is about to open, Grove Park is expected to close temporarily following the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Muhammad said major renovations are planned for the facility and he wants that work to wrap up before spring and summer activities begin.

He said a meeting will be held in the coming weeks to inform residents about the city’s plans for the facility, adding that once it reopens, residents will “be very proud of the product we’ll be presenting.”

Meanwhile, the city is looking to hire three new zookeepers for the Jackson Zoo. He urged those interested in applying to visit the city’s website.

He said one keeper left after completing school, while another one left because their spouse is in the military.

He said the city will begin reviewing applications next week. According to the city’s website, the position pays between $13.61 and $15.26 a week. The city will cover all certification costs.
