People don’t understand what working nights are like, and they really don’t understand manipulating sleep schedules to stay awake during a rotation. Maintenance outages can be even worse. In the oil industry, a 3-month turnaround is normal. You work 13 days during that period with one day off 12-16 hours a day. If your SO is a regular M-F 9-5 schedule and you’re on the night shift, you may not see each other for three months. That really strains relationships if the partner isn’t aware/used to it.”
