Boys basketball season begins this week in southeastern Minnesota. Here are 12 players to keep an eye on throughout the year.
Lee is coming off an outstanding junior season for the KoMets. The 6-foot-5 senior guard/forward set single-season school records for most points scored (697), field goals made (233) and free throws made (176). Along the way, he averaged 25.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game and earned All-Hiawatha Valley League honors. Lee will surely be an asset to the KoMets again this season on both sides of the ball.
Petersohn, a three-sport athlete, is gearing up for another basketball season after a standout football season at quarterback for Triton, guiding the Cobras to a section title. The 6-foot-4 junior guard averaged 23.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as a sophomore while being named first-team All-Gopher Conference. He has 1,095 career points so far and set single-season school records for points scored (644) and free throws made.
The 6-foot-5 senior guard averaged 16.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 2.7 apg while shooting 43.7% from the arc and 84.6% from the free-throw line. His performance earned him All-HVL accolades. He will likely take on an important role for the Bears, who were Section 1, Class 3A runners-up last season.
At 6-feet-4, the senior guard averaged 9.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.1 apg and 1.9 spg and was named All-HVL last season. He was one of many talented Tigers on a roster that reached the Class 3A state tournament. As a senior, he should play a bigger role this season for the defending Section 1, Class 3A champs. Wangen, who just won back-to-back state football championships with Stewartville, is committed to play football at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Another quarterback transitioning to basketball season is senior Cam Hungerholt, who averaged 24.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 4.1 steals and 1.5 blocks per game as a junior. The 6-foot-2 point guard scored 665 points last season, surpassing 1,000 career points. He was also named second-team All-Southeast Conference. Hungerholt is an all-around athlete committed to Minnesota State University, Mankato for football.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard was one of five Caledonia players named All-Three Rivers Conference last season. As a junior, he averaged 16.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 63.6% from the floor. Klug will be one to watch this year for the Warriors, who finished 23-5 overall last season, losing in the section semifinals to Cannon Falls.
Kittelson recorded 16.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.8 apg and 4.0 spg during his junior season, earning a school record with 124 steals. The 6-foot-2 senior guard was named All-Gopher Conference and helped lead the Awesome Blossoms to the Section 1, Class 1A championship game, where they were crowned runners-up.
At 6-feet-1, Roschen put up 18.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.2 apg and 2.8 spg as a sophomore and was All-HVL. The junior guard helped defending section champion Goodhue reach the Class 1A state tournament last season. He is shaping up to be a key member of the team again this season.
Rohweder averaged 18.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg and 2.3 spg, making 97 3-pointers last season. The 6-foot-2 senior guard exceeded 1,000 career points and was named first-team All-SEC as a junior. He will make an impact as Houston looks to improve on its 15-12 overall and 10-9 SEC record from 2023-24.
The 6-foot-4 senior forward recorded 16.5 ppg, 11.3 rpg and 2.7 bpg last season while earning All-Three Rivers Conference honors. As a junior, Nelson contributed to L-A’s 18-10 overall and 10-5 TRC record.
Koehler put up 17.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.8 apg and 2.2 spg as a junior for Red Wing. The 6-foot senior guard looks to help the Wingers better their 6-21 overall record and 3-15 showing in the Big Nine Conference last season.
The 6-foot-5 senior forward averaged 13.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.9 apg and 2.0 spg for Spring Grove as a junior. Udstuen helped the Lions go 25-4 overall and 18-2 in the SEC last season, losing to Fillmore Central by one point in the section quarterfinals.
