I’ve been running for 12 years and have completed one full marathon, along with over a dozen half marathons and 10Ks. There are two things I always keep in mind throughout training and on race day: staying limber (cross-training and stretching) and adhering to a proper recovery routine (stretching, foam rolling, massage guns, ice baths, etc.). Through trial and error, I’ve managed to nail my pre- and post-run routines, but something I’m currently working on is staying hydrated while running. On race day, I rely on the stations of water and Gatorade along the course, but while training, I never carry water with me on runs — simply because it’s a hassle to hold something while logging miles.
But as I continue to learn about the importance of hydration for performance and recovery (some key benefits: fueling up maintains high energy levels to sustain long runs, restores electrolytes lost when sweating, and prevents dehydration), I’ve realized how helpful it is to add a water bottle to my arsenal of running gear.
While searching for the perfect running water bottle, I came across minimalist handheld bottles, hands-free options via waist belts or backpacks, and clip attachment bottles that you can add to belts. Selecting what to use to stay hydrated comes down to personal preference. You might choose to focus on something lightweight, low-cost, or something that can hold a lot of fluid. To help you sort through the plethora of options, ahead we’ve curated the best 10 water bottles available for runners of all kinds.
